Every jump near a hazard be it a jellyfish or burning torch must be judged perfectly, or you have to start again. And each moment of discovery when you work out where an item goes is a moment of air-punching glee. Even though the whole game fits into 48k of RAM, it's still brilliant.

One of the biggest surprises of 2023 is Hi-Fi Rush, a game that was announced and then released all on the same day. However, the most shocking aspect of Hi-Fi Rush is that it was developed by Tango Gameworks, a studio founded by the former Resident Evil director Shinji Mikami and is primarily known for its survival horror franchise, The Evil Within. Hi-Fi Rush is about as opposite as a game could be as not only does it utilize a much brighter color palette and feature loads of stylish charm, but the biggest gameplay mechanic revolves around music and matching player actions to the rhythm of each level. 2. Jump Through Platform But even the more typical platforming bits are something special. Wonderful animation ensures the game is full of life, while carefully placed hazards and enemies cleverly shift and change the game’s tempo as you pick your way through each level.
